Following on from a successful run of four Dyson commercials, Mainframe were delighted to win the pitch to produce the new spot for Dyson's range of Next Generation Fans.
The biggest challenge in the production was how to really give the viewer a sense of how much quieter the new generation of fans are and also why. An accurate 3d depiction of the new technology was created to show off the new technology and composited into the fan, x-ray style. To engage the viewer, a point of view shot was fully prevized and then programmed into a milo motion control rig to give the feeling of being at the very heart of the airflow.
We shot over two days at Black Island Studios with a full set build which was enhanced in post with the introduction of an exterior night sky and various scenery objects such as the hanging kids mobile. A set of three babies were used on the shoot to shoot to ensure we had a child sleeping at just the right time. Amazingly one of the three slept on cue and made it's mum and a very large crew extremely happy.
One of the more complex problems in post was creating a credible simulation of the airflow which had to reflect an existing print representation. Krakatoa for 3ds max was used to achieve the right look/movement and Maya was used for the rest of the 3d work. All clean up and compositing was carried out by Mainframe's Nuke team and the final grade was completed in Resolve.
Production, direction, editing, cg, compositing and grade were all handled in house at Mainframe.
