The challenge

(01)

AirSeal is a valveless access system with real benefit for surgical teams and patients, with clinical evidence behind it. The benefit comes from the invisible airflow that happens inside the device. Existing animation could not accurately explain what made it truly unique or set AirSeal apart from alternative devices as the premium option.

ConMed needed the mechanism explained clearly, and the device presented at the level the engineering deserves.

The discovery

(02)

We started with the engineering. Working from ConMed’s CAD models and speaking directly with the people who understand the device best, to define how the AirSeal works and should be represented before design began: this involved understanding the technicalities that inform how we accurately visualise crucial details such as: the two-wall cannula, the filtered gas that forms the pressure barrier, the separate CO2 pathway, the smoke evacuation etc.

This technical discovery stage keeps the work accurate from the first animatic, and it minimises the risk of MLR delays later in the project.

The craft

(03)

That understanding informs every design choice. The camera orbits the device and opens it up in sequential cross-sections, telling each gas path on its own. High-end particle and smoke simulation gives the flows direction and turbulence, each gas carries its own colour, and overlay graphics keep the sequence clear with the sound off.

Mainframe’s background is in CG product work for consumer and technology brands, and we bring the same brand design sensibilities to technical and medical devices: premium product rendering, considered lighting, and reveals designed to engage. The same craft runs through our product animation work.
