The challenge
(01)
The BBC Two rebrand built a library of idents around the curve of the numeral 2, each one a different artistic expression with the curve as the constant. Superunion had reached production and needed two films for the launch library, in two moods set by the brief. Offbeat was surreal, bizarre or a bit daft. Gripping was tightening, suffocating and claustrophobic.
Timing and logo placement were fixed to the frame so the package ran seamlessly on air.

The behaviour
(02)
Each ident lives or dies on how it moves. Soft, hard and furry materials gave Offbeat its strangeness. A twisted, tight composition gave Gripping its tension. Texture, shader, colour and lighting tests ran until each mood was unmistakable with the sound off.

The craft
(03)
The films were built in close collaboration with Superunion, with Peter Tomaszewicz on one of the idents and sound by Alex Baranowski. As the package grew, Mainframe was asked back for Sharp and for the next batch of Christmas idents.
